The Eagles in Belfast

December 9, 2008

lmost eight years to the day since they wowed audiences along the green grassy slopes of Stormont, US rock group The Eagles is set to return to Northern Ireland for another one-off show.

The American country rock band, which had five No. 1 singles and six No. 1 albums, have just announced they will play the Odyssey Arena on June 30, 2009.

The Eagles, who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and have won four Grammy Awards.

Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is the best-selling album of all time, exceeding sales of 29m, and the band’s albums Hotel California and Greatest Hits Volume 2 have sold more than 16m and 11m albums respectively.

When they first took to the stage at Stormont on June 29, 2001, they received a raucous welcome from fans. They were the fourth high profile act invited to play at the grounds as part of a series of open-air concerts following the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Elton John was the first artist to grace the grounds.

The late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti was invited the following year and Lord of the Dance star Michael Flatley delighted audiences with his dancing skills in the lush surroundings.

Demand for the Eagles next Belfast date is expected to be very high. Last year, the group released their seventh studio album, Long Road Out Of Eden — their first since 1979, which sold 5,593,120 copies worldwide.

Long Road Out Of Eden debuted at number one, selling a staggering 711,000 in nine weeks to become the biggest selling album by a group in 2007.

The Eagles also won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for How Long.

Fans of the band, which features Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit, can expect a stellar show with the group performing hits from Long Road Out Of Eden, including How Long and Busy Being Fabulous, as well as a repertoire of songs from earlier albums including classics such as Hotel California, Take It Easy and One Of These Nights.

Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, December 11, at 9am from the Odyssey Arena Box office and all usual TheOnlineTicketExchange outlets.
